Center for Disaster Preparedness

Andhra Pradesh State is prone to natural disaster. Disaster preparedness and consequent management is a complex process. To develop expertise in this area and give policy guidance and support, the Center for Disaster Preparedness was established in 2004. Since then, it has focused on capacity building through training and coordination of various groups on disaster preparedness, relief and rehabilitation measures of Andhra Pradesh in particular and India, in general.

Objectives of the Center include:
Training and capacity building activities related to disaster preparedness, organizing seminars and workshops for sharing and upgrading skills.
Suggesting suitable models for disaster preparation, warning, mitigation, post-disaster relief and reconstruction activities.
Providing planning and consultancy services to the State and Central Governments in addressing specific issues related to disaster management.
Sharing the experience of AP with other states in India, besides forging the links between sustainable development and disaster reduction.
Facilitating emergence of a center of excellence on disaster preparedness in Andhra Pradesh

The CENTER has conducted several training programmes related to cyclones, floods and disaster management during 2008-2009. It has organized and facilitated an Indo-US International Workshop on Urban Floods during January 2009 and a Workshop for Preparation of Guidelines for Management of Drought in March 2009, which was sponsored by the National Disaster Management Authority.

Working in close collaboration with the United States Agency for International Development and IRG, an international NGO, the CENTER has coordinated and conducted several programmes on Incident Command System, a crisis response mechanism in two pilot districts of Khammam and Nellore in Andhra Pradesh
